U.S. Open Golf 2025 – Schedule, Field, and Tickets

The U.S. Open Golf Championship 2025 is the 3rd major of the season and will be held at the legendary Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. This 124th edition of the tournament is organised by the United States Golf Association (USGA) – a part of the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and Japan Golf Tour schedules.

It’s truly an “open” championship where the world’s top 60-ranked professionals, former major champions, top amateurs, and qualifiers worldwide earn their place in a 156-player field. The regional qualifying rounds are held globally, followed by Final Qualifying, also known as “Golf’s Longest Day”. This is a stroke play tournament (72 holes over 4 days), but what makes it unique is the open qualifying system, where world-class professionals and amateurs appear on the same leaderboard.

U.S. Open Golf 2025 Location

Oakmont Country Club venue of U.S. Open Golf 2025

The 2025 U.S. Open will be played at Oakmont Country Club, Oakmont. The course hosted its first U.S. Open in 1927 and will host the U.S. Open for the 10th time in 2025, a record for any American course. Oakmont’s greens are the fastest and most slippery in the world. The course has over 175 bunkers, many of which are deep and narrow. The most famous feature of this par-70 field is the “Church Pew” bunker, which is 100 yards long and 40 yards wide with 12 grass-covered ridges that look like church pews.

U.S. Open Golf 2025 Apparel

June is warm and humid in Pennsylvania. UV index is high, which affects skin and eye health. Players need to wear lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking golf apparel. Lightweight golf polos that absorb sweat and allow airflow not only feel comfortable but can also improve performance. Shorts are good for warm weather but wear lightweight trousers if it gets chilly. Since it rains in Oakmont, having waterproof jackets or rain gear is a must. Wear performance caps or visors and high-quality sunglasses with UV protection. Comfortable golf joggers are also a must, especially those made with moisture-wicking fabric and a secure fit to maintain comfort and mobility in damp conditions.

U.S. Open 2025 Qualifying

U.S. Open 2025 Qualifying

The U.S. Open Golf 2025 qualifying process has two stages for both professionals and amateurs: Local Qualifying and Final Qualifying.

1. Local Qualifying

Local Qualifying is April 16 to May 19, 2025. One 18-hole round will be played. These events will be played across 43 U.S. states, Canada, and Mexico, with a total of 110 sites. A Handicap Index® of 0.4 or lower is required for local qualifying. Pros can also qualify, while amateurs must sign up for the qualifying event. Players who win the Local Qualifying round then move on to the Final Qualifying stage. The entry process for this stage has a big impact on players, as Local Qualifying knocks out many contestants each year.

2. Final Qualifying

Final Qualifying will start from May 19 to June 2, 2025. Two 18-hole rounds are played in one day. It is more challenging because players have to play both rounds in one day. Final Qualifying happens at 13 spots in the U.S., with some events in Canada and Japan too. The best performers in the Final Qualifying get to play in the U.S. Open Championship right away. This is the final step for players who want to try their best to get in the U.S. Open.

3. Exemptions

Some players don't need to qualify. They get a free pass based on how well they've done in major tournaments. For instance, players in the top 60 of the Official World Golf Ranking can play in the U.S. Open without qualifying. Big tournament winners also get in without qualifying, like those who've won the PGA Championship or The Open Championship.

4. LIV Golf Players Exemption

If a LIV Golf player is in the top 3 of the LIV Golf Individual Standings by May 19, 2025, they get in Final Qualifying. If the top 3 are already in, then the top 10 players from LIV Golf get in Final Qualifying. This exemption was created because of the LIV vs PGA rivalry, so LIV Golf players can qualify for the U.S. Open even though they are on a different tour.

U.S. Open Championship 2025 Prize Pool

For 2025, the total purse is expected to be around $21.5 million or more, one of the largest in golf history. The winner of the 2025 U.S. Open will take home around $4.3 million. The second and third place finishers will get seven-figure payouts with estimates of $2.32 million for second, $1.45 million for third, $1.01 million for fourth, and $843,000 for fifth. Those numbers will be adjusted after the tournament but they usually stay close to these figures. The prize for the 10th place is expected to earn around $500,000. The winner also gets 10 10-year exemptions into future U.S. Opens and 5-year exemptions into other majors like The Masters, The Open Championship, and the PGA Championship.
