Barracuda Championship — Schedule, Format, and More

The Barracuda Championship is a unique golf tournament on the PGA TOUR because of its Modified Stableford Scoring System. The event will take place from July 14 to 20, 2025 at the Old Greenwood Golf Course in the Tahoe Mountain Club in Truckee, California. The event started in 1999 as the Reno-Tahoe Open. In 2012, it was rebranded as the Barracuda Championship and switched to the Modified Stableford format to promote more aggressive, faster-paced, and high risk-reward golf.

Barracuda Golf Championship is sanctioned by both the PGA TOUR and the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour). Collin Morikawa won his first PGA TOUR event here in 2020. The other winners include Richy Werenski and Chez Reavie.

The tournament will be held at Tahoe Mountain Club – Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee, California in the Sierra Nevada mountains. This par-71 course sits at around 6,000 feet where the ball goes farther than usual. It’s beautiful with Sierra Nevada views on almost every hole and challenging with dense forest, wide fairways, water hazards, and meadows. One of the signature holes is Hole 6, which is a risk-reward par-5. Hole 14 is a downhill par-3 from an elevated tee box. The hole is affected by wind and framed by trees and water.

Mornings are cool so start with a light base layer or golf vest. As it warms up in the afternoon, a breathable, moisture-wicking polo will keep you cool. Wear stretchy golf trousers in the morning. A cap or wide-brimmed golf hat is a must due to the scorching sun at high elevation.

2025 Barracuda Championship Format

This unique PGA TOUR event uses the Modified Stableford Scoring System, which is totally different from traditional stroke play. In this format, players aren’t trying to take the fewest strokes. Instead, they’re trying to score as many points as possible. 156 players will compete in the tournament, including 106 PGA TOUR players and 50 DP World Tour members. The event is 4 rounds (72 holes) and after Friday, there is a cut. Only the top 65 and ties make the weekend.

In the Barracuda Championship scoring method, players are awarded points on each hole based on their performance. Double eagle (Albatross) gets 8 points, eagle 5 points, birdie – 2 points, par 0 points, bogey 1 point, double bogey or worse 3 points. What makes this format special is that it encourages aggressive play. Since a birdie is +2 points and a bogey only loses you –1 point, players are more likely to take risks and go for big shots.

In the first two rounds, players tee off from holes 1 and 10 in morning and afternoon waves. In rounds 3 and 4, pairings are based on points where the lowest points go out first and the top scorers go out last.
