Zurich Classic 2025 – Field, Schedule, and Format

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a fun PGA Tour golf tournament held at TPC Louisiana, Avondale, Louisiana, USA. What makes this event unique is the team format where two players play in different formats, making the tournament even more exciting. Teamwork and strategy play a big role, adding a new dimension to traditional stroke-play golf.

The Zurich Classic was first played in 1938 but adopted the team format in 2017. The Zurich Insurance Group is the title sponsor and the Fore!Kids Foundation is the organizer. Together Zurich and the Fore!Kids Foundation have raised over $18 million for over 40 charities that serve thousands of kids in need in southeastern Louisiana.

Over the years, some of the greatest golfers have played in this event, including Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Rory McIlroy, and Patrick Cantlay. In 2024, Nick Hardy and Davis Riley were the champions. Top Zurich Classic 2025 players include some of the biggest names like Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, and Max Homa.

Zurich Classic 2025 Format

The Zurich Classic is not stroke play, but a team-based golf tournament. It’s the only PGA Tour event where 2-player teams (a total of 80 teams) compete instead of individual players. There are 4 rounds and each round has a different format. The first and third round includes the Best Ball (Four-Ball) format. The second and final round follows the Foursomes format. After two rounds of the cut, the top 33 teams (plus ties) advance to the final two rounds. The Zurich Classic golf tournament follows a stroke play scoring where the lowest total score after 4 rounds wins.

Round 1 – Best Ball (Four-Ball)

Best Ball (Four-Ball) format where players can be aggressive. Both players hit their own ball but only the best score counts. This format allows teams to play with an edge – one player can take risks and the other will back them up, increasing the chance of a better score. This round will see a lot of birdies and eagles and teams will score between -7 and -12 which is very low in professional golf.

Round 2 – Alternate Shot (Foursomes)

The second round is the Alternate Shot (Foursomes) format where each team plays with one ball and players take turns hitting shots. If one player takes the tee shot the other player must hit the next shot and so on. This format is high pressure because one mistake can be costly as there’s little recovery time. Strategy and direction are key, even a small mistake can hurt the team overall. Scores in this round are usually higher, -2 to -5. The most pressure is on the cut line, only the top 33 teams (ties) advance to the next round.

Round 3 – Best Ball (Four-Ball)

Teams that make the cut move on to the third round where Best Ball (Four-Ball) is played again. Since it’s an aggressive game of the Moving Day, scores are low and we see big swings on the board. This is the tipping point of the tournament, which determines which teams will have a real shot at winning in the final round.

Final Round – Alternate Shot (Foursomes)

The final and most important round of the Zurich Classic is played in Alternate Shot (Foursomes). The pressure is intense and only the mentally strongest teams can win. The team with the lowest total score after four rounds wins the Zurich Classic. If there is a tie, the tournament goes to a sudden-death playoff which is also an Alternate Shot format. The playoff continues until one team beats the other.

For this PGA Tour event, players must follow these special rules:

  • Once the order is decided for Alternate Shot, it can’t be changed during the round. Players must play in the same order throughout.

  • While teams can strategize, each player must take at least six tee shots in the Alternate Shot rounds.

  • If a player hits the wrong ball, whether from another team or their own partner, it’s a 2-stroke penalty. There will be only 40 seconds to hit each shot. If a team takes too long, they get a warning, if they continue to delay, a penalty stroke is enforced.
