In this blog, you will get to know everything: the schedule, the venue, the prize money, the field, the players to watch, and the results from the first two editions.

A Brief History of the Tournament

It all started in October 2024 as the Black Desert Championship. At first, the big story was not golf. It was the location. First PGA TOUR event in Utah since 1963. Over sixty years. A brand new course carved through red rock had everyone's attention.

Then the players went out and shot the lights out. Matt McCarty won it. He was twenty-six, left-handed, from Arizona, and it was his second start as an official PGA TOUR member. His rounds of 62, 68, 64 and 67 made 23 under par, three shots clear of Stephan Jaeger.

The shot of the week came on Sunday at the par-4 14th. The hole is only 310 yards. McCarty drove the green and rolled in the eagle putt from four feet to turn one shot into three.

Lucas Glover and Kevin Streelman tied for third at 19 under. McCarty walked off with $1.35 million from a $7.5 million purse, which capped a rise that already included three Korn Ferry Tour wins that same season. 2025 brought a new name and a new sponsor: the Bank of Utah Championship. Same low scoring. Another first-time winner with a storybook week.

2025: Brennan's Breakthrough Win

Michael Brennan arrived at Black Desert in 2025 as a 23-year-old with a sponsor exemption. It was only the third PGA TOUR start of his career. Four days later, he was a PGA TOUR winner.

Brennan opened with rounds of 67, 65, 64 and 66. He finished at 22 under par, four shots ahead of Rico Hoey. Sunday started about as well as Brennan could have hoped. He made five birdies without a bogey on the front nine and reached the turn with a five-shot lead.

Then things got a little tense. Brennan bogeyed the 10th while Hoey made a birdie. Suddenly, the lead was down to three shots. Brennan did not let it get away. He made two more birdies and stayed in control, although a bogey on the final hole gave the finish a little extra drama in the 72-hole stroke-play format. He also led the field in strokes gained off the tee.

Hoey finished second at 18 under. Six players tied for third at 16 under: Pierceson Coody, David Ford, Justin Lower, Matt McCarty, Thorbjorn Olesen and Ben Silverman.

Brennan's story did not stop there. In the summer of 2026, he won the Wyndham Championship, again finishing at 22 under par. He then made the FedExCup playoffs and tied for 10th at the BMW Championship at Bellerive. That run pushed him up to No. 32 in the Official World Golf Ranking, which is the highest ranking of his career.

2026 Schedule and Venue

Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4. All four rounds at Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah.

Daily pairings are scheduled to be released on September 30. The first tee time for Thursday's opening round is scheduled for 7:50 a.m. local time.

Black Desert will play as a par 71 measuring 7,421 yards, but its elevation of roughly 3,100 feet also affects how the course plays. At that altitude, the ball can travel farther, meaning players may need to adjust their club selection throughout the round.

The elevation is only part of the scoring picture. Black Desert also offers generous fairways and plenty of opportunities for aggressive play, helping explain why the first two winning totals reached 23 under and 22 under. If conditions remain calm, the course has already shown that low scoring is possible.

The cut comes after Friday's second round. Top 65 and ties play the weekend. It's the 39th event of the 2026 PGA Tour season and the second of eight FedExCup Fall tournaments.

Bank of Utah Championship Prize Money

The 2026 Bank of Utah Championship has a $6 million purse, with $1.08 million going to the winner.

Just as important are the 500 FedExCup points available to the champion. Those points can have a major impact during the FedExCup Fall, when players are competing to secure their status and improve their opportunities for the following season.

At the end of the 2026 FedExCup Fall, the top 100 players in the standings earn fully exempt PGA TOUR status for 2027. Players finishing outside the top 100 may fall into conditional-status categories, which can mean fewer guaranteed starts.

There is another important target as well. Players who finish the fall between 51st and 60th in the FedExCup standings can earn places in the early 2027 Signature Events, including the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.

A win in Utah can therefore do much more than add a trophy. It can significantly improve a player's position heading into the 2027 season.

Bank of Utah Championship Field

The Bank of Utah Championship is scheduled to feature a 120-player field. The lineup has been built through the PGA TOUR Priority Ranking, exemptions and other eligibility categories, with four places allocated to open qualifying and further late changes possible before the tournament begins.

The latest published field update has Kevin Streelman moving into the field after Lanto Griffin withdrew. Tyson Shelley has also been added through a sponsor exemption. Tyler Duncan remains among the leading alternates, and the lineup can still change before Thursday's opening round.

The field also includes a strong group of highly ranked players, with 24 players currently inside the world's top 100.

The highest-ranked players in the field are listed below.

And it doesn't stop at the rankings. Tony Finau also brings a strong local connection, having grown up in Salt Lake City. His Utah roots should make him one of the players attracting plenty of local interest during the week.

Billy Horschel, Rico Hoey, David Ford, Lucas Glover and Stephan Jaeger add further depth to the field.

Players to Watch

  • Michael Brennan: The defending champion and highest-ranked player in the field. Brennan won here at 22 under in 2025 and added another PGA TOUR victory at the Wyndham Championship in 2026.

  • Tony Finau: A Utah native with plenty of local support. His length could be particularly relevant at a course where altitude affects how far the ball travels.

  • Jackson Koivun: Comes to Utah immediately after an unbeaten Presidents Cup debut, where he posted a 2-0-1 record for the winning U.S. Team. His combination of distance and recent form makes him one of the most interesting players in the field.

  • Maverick McNealy: The second-highest-ranked player in the field and one of the strongest names in the 2026 lineup.

  • Rico Hoey: Finished runner-up at Black Desert in 2025, four shots behind Brennan, giving him one of the strongest recent course records in the field.

  • Matt McCarty: Winner of the inaugural event in 2024 and tied for third in 2025. His win and top-three finish give him one of the best two-year records at Black Desert.
